Year 6: Outstanding Owls & Excellent Eagles
Our Outstanding Owls are taught by Mrs Tamkin and Excellent Eagles are taught Miss Warren.
Overview by subject
English: In writing, we are focusing on the video clip 'The Piano' by Aidan Gibbons: the children are working towards writing their own flashback narratives. They will also explore the picture book 'The Red Tree' and will be analysing poetry in order to create their own poem at the end of the term.
Maths: In Autumn 2, children will be continuing to revise fractions. The next Maths unit will be Geometry: Position and Direction.
Science: This term the children will be learning about Light. They will discover the way in which we see, how light bends, how it reflects and how it refracts. They will also explore the colour spectrum and understand how we see colour.
Art and Design: In Art, we will be exploring how to draw people in action. We will research artists who show motion/ movement within their pieces, use digital collaging to represent images moving and develop out sketching and water colour skills to create a final piece.
Design and Technology: This term, the Year 6s will be working towards creating a detailed shadow puppet. They will explore the history of shadow puppets, choose materials and skills needed when planning their shadow puppet and work towards creating a shadow puppet theatre show.
Computing: This term, the children will explore the importance of Online Safety. They will also be learning about web pages and will work towards creating their own web page based on our Science top 'Light'.
Important Information
PE
Our PE days are Mondays and Wednesdays. Please ensure your child has their PE kit at school, hair tied back and no earrings.
Reading Books
The children are given daily reminders to check if they need to change their book.
Children should be reading at least 3 times a week at home and this should be recorded on our online Reading Log on Marvellous Me.
How You Can Help Your Child at Home
- Homework- Year 6 homework looks slightly different. Children will be set work to complete from their SATs preparation workbooks on a Thursday, which is then due in the following Thursday.
- Spellings - Children will be taught the new spelling rule weekly, they must then investigate and create their own spelling list, spelling list to be complete by a Monday, but the spelling task (spelling flower, silly sentences) can be completed by Thursday.
- Reading to your child is still important, even as they become more independent readers. Sharing a story helps the children to become better readers and writers themselves, so please continue to do this!
- Follow up research, visits or discussions with your child about what they are learning.
- Continued revision on your child's maths passport objectives.
- Using our amazing online resources: ReadTheory, TTRockstars and Spelling Shed.
- There are also a variety of websites your child can access at home show they wish to get in some extra revision:
