Year 1: Happy Hippos & Amazing Ants

Our Autumn 2 Topic is 'Once upon a time'

Important Bits:

WOW Day 1st November: Year One are going to be having a ‘WOW Day’ on Monday 1st November to introduce our new topic “Once Upon A Time”. Children are invited to dress up as their favourite book character, staff will be reading their favourite fairy tales and we will be decorating gingerbread men. The gingerbread men will be brought home to enjoy, not eaten at school.

Spellings: Year 1 pupils will be set a spelling rule on spelling shed every week (the rule will have been practised in class during the week).  

PE: PE sessions will take place on Tuesday and Thursday so please wear your PE kits and ensure any earrings are taken out.

Overview by subject:

Literacy: In class we are reading "The Gingerbread Man". We will continue practising our letter formation, use our phonic knowledge to help us write instructions and retell the story. 

Maths: Our new Maths skills will be addition and subtraction, will we develop our knowledge of the symbols and practice adding and subtracting numbers.

Science: This term the children will be learning about everyday materials. We will be sorting objects by material such as wood, metal, plastic and glass as well as thinking about the properties of these materials. 

DT: We will use our materials knowledge to help the Gingerbread man cross the river and design the Three Little Pigs a house.

History: This term we will be learning about the Great fire of London.

Computing: We will be focusing on E Safety and learning how and why we need to keep ourselves safe online.

Music: We will be learning the songs ‘Rhythm in the way we walk and the banana rap!’

RE: We are teaching Christianity and learning about the Christmas story.

Our Autumn 1 Topic is 'Born to be wild'

Overview by subject:

Literacy: In class we are reading "Dear Zoo". We are practising our letter formation and learning how to use our phonic knowledge to help us write captions for pictures.

 

Maths: Our new Maths skills will be place value knowledge with numbers to 10- sorting objects into groups, counting, knowing one more and one less than a number, being able to say if a number is greater than, less than and equal to another number.

   

Science: This term the children will be learning about animals including humans through activities such as labelling the parts of animals/humans e.g. arms, hands, feet, legs, eyes. We will also be Investigating the Red Kites and their habitats and comparing them with other animals.

Geography: This term the children will be learning about our local area and beginning to look at maps such as a map of our school.

Computing: We will be focusing on E Safety and learning how and why we need to keep ourselves safe online.

Art: We will study the work of John James Audubon and use our own observation and photographs to sketch and paint a Red Kite and paint animals in the style of Jackson Pollock.

Music: We will be learning the song Hey You! 

RE: We are teaching Christianity and learning about the creation story.
