PSHE

At Rushden Primary Academy, our Personal, Social, Health and Education curriculum aims to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes our pupils need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepare for life and work in modern Britain. The skills we teach the children have an impact on both academic and non-academic outcomes for pupils, particularly the most vulnerable and disadvantaged.

At Rushden Primary Academy we aim to develop skills and attributes such as resilience, self-esteem, risk-management, team working and critical thinking through the learning in four core themes:

  • Citizenship
  • Economic wellbeing
  • Healthy and safer lifestyles
  • Myself and my relationships

Citizenship

This core theme focuses on:

  • respect for self and others and the importance of responsible behaviours and actions
  • rights and responsibilities as members of families, other groups and ultimately as citizens
  • different groups and communities
  • respect diversity and equality and how to be a productive member of a diverse community
  • the importance of respecting and protecting the environment

Our PSHE education teaches these objectives through a variety of areas; diversity and communities, rights, rules and responsibilities, and working together.

Economic Wellbeing

This core theme focuses on:

  • where money comes from, keeping it safe and the importance of managing it effectively
  • the part that money plays in people’s lives
  • a basic understanding of enterprise

We believe teaching children about personal finance and about respecting and managing money helps them to become financially capable and better able to meet the increasingly complex financial challenges that await them in the wider world. Learning about money is an essential life skill; it’s never too early to introduce children to the basics of personal finance. Even by the age of seven, research shows, children are aware of the impact of money on their lives.

Health and Safer Lifestyles

This core theme focuses on:

  • what is meant by a healthy lifestyle
  • how to maintain physical, mental and emotional health and wellbeing
  • how to manage risks to physical and emotional health and wellbeing
  • ways of keeping physically and emotionally safe
  • about managing change, including puberty, transition and loss
  • how to make informed choices about health and wellbeing and to recognise sources of help with this
  • how to respond in an emergency
  • to identify different influences on health and wellbeing

Our PSHE education teaches these objectives through a variety of areas; drug education, healthy lifestyles, managing risk, personal safety, safety contexts and sex and relationships education (SRE)

Myself and My Relationships

This core theme focuses on:

  • how to develop and maintain a variety of healthy relationships, within a range of social/cultural contexts
  • how to recognise and manage emotions within a range of relationships
  • how to recognise risky or negative relationships including all forms of bullying and abuse
  • how to respond to risky or negative relationships and ask for help
  • how to respect equality and diversity in relationships

These objectives are taught through a variety of areas; anti-bullying, beginning and belonging, family and friends, managing change and me and my emotions.
